The Luweero Muslim District Council has elected Hajji Muhammad Matovu as its new District Chairman following the impeachment of his predecessor, Ali Ndawula, over alleged misconduct and misrepresentation of the district.
Matovu was unanimously endorsed during a District Council meeting on Tuesday and was immediately sworn into office.
In his acceptance speech, Matovu pledged to work closely with district leaders to implement programmes, promote unity among Muslims and uphold transparency and accountability in line with the Constitution of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
"I will work hand in hand with all leaders to strengthen our institutions, unite the believers, and ensure that the affairs of Luweero Muslim District are managed with transparency, accountability, and commitment to the Constitution of UMSC," Matovu said.
The council also approved a Shs264 million budget for the 2026/2027 financial year to finance the district's operations and development programmes.
Presenting the budget, District Treasurer Gadafi Abdu Bachou urged leaders to strengthen resource mobilisation to ensure the approved programmes are implemented.
During the meeting, Luweero District Kadhi Sheikh Hajji Mulindwa Ramadhan Swaib Nsanja expressed concern over the alleged encroachment and illegal sale of Muslim land, citing Nalweweta, a Uganda Muslim Supreme Council property reportedly occupied by members of the Kibuli faction.
The Kadhi alleged that about 7.5 acres of the land had been sold under the pretext of processing land titles and called for the urgent registration and titling of all Muslim properties across the district to safeguard them against further encroachment.
He also directed County Sheikhs to fill vacant leadership positions and intensify mobilisation of Muslims to support community programmes through Zakat and voluntary Sadaqah contributions.
The council further approved the establishment of sectoral committees to oversee implementation of district programmes and strengthen accountability in the use of resources.
Members also received a progress report indicating that renovation of the Luweero Muslim District Headquarters Mosque and construction of a Shs150 million ablution (wudhu) facility are ongoing, with the project now at the roofing stage.
